IN THE QUIET

 

 

A collection that originated with the idea to create a body of work that would not rely on any external reference but tap into the archived memories of interaction and observances of nature and the environment. The underlying thought was to have no set rules. There were no preliminary sketches. The creative process was spontaneous, intuitive and unconstrained. The organic forms emerged from impressions left by the natural world in the subconscious. The only intentional decision was to use a minimal color palette to transfer authorship to the viewer to create their own stories.

 

These works explore, the concept of life and decay, form and movement, silence and the timeless interconnectedness between elements, uncertainty and eternity in nature.  The collection moves from the inanimate to the animate, bringing together flora, fauna, mineral and elements together because nature is all encompassing.

 

The silence and the stoic of the impassive rock formations were a contemplative process, consciously creating masses that balanced and stood strong just like they would if they were real. They stand tranquil, each rock holding its place, each rock essential to the whole. In their precarity one can see strength.

 

Artworks in graphite and charcoal were experimental, by creating unforced, invisible and unmediated indentations on white paper, the marks revealed themselves to bring forth hidden forms and textures which otherwise would not have been. The drawings on paper were first made by the non-dominant hand; no changes were made to keep the purity and rawness of the untrained arm.

 

The paintings in acrylic came to life layer by layer, slowly unfolding. Some fossil like, but not quite so. While some took shape starting as fluid tendrils, others first breathed as biomorphic presence. Latent forms surfaced through the textures and brought them to life. new forms emerging and merging into each other as one entity. Orbis and Telluris are a continuous loop signifying eternity in nature, Nidus Telluirs and Cunae Orbis  nurture the idea of birth, belonging and growth and Nexus is about connections.

 

This series is an ode to Nature from memories that were made in the quiet.
